1: Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center (PEEC) Building and Green Roof
The PEEC opened in 1999 as one of the first speculatively-built
commercial facilities to employ integrative approach to sustainable
design and construction. This 64,000 s.f. facility participated in the
pilot phase of USGBC LEED building rating program and is home to 20
companies. Aside from a green roof, the PEEC integrates sustainable
design features including a ground source heat pump, sun-tracking
skylights, aggressive use of salvaged materials, low-emission finishes
and adhesives, a prairie restoration and a 34-kW photovoltaic array. The
4000 s.f. green roof was partially installed during construction and
completed in 2004 and was the recipient of the 2006
Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Award of Excellence in the Extensive
Industrial/Commercial category. The green roof retains 85% of
rainfall and is accessible to tenants and visitors via a third-story
corridor. The roof integrates a walkway and observation deck constructed
from recycled plastic lumber and involves contrasting sedum species with
grasses and wildflowers native to Minnesota's bedrock bluff prairie
ecosystem.

2: Uptown Tour
This
tour will stop at four sites starting with Midtown Lofts, located on the
greenway. This 72-unit townhouse project is the first phase of a
multi-phase "urban village" and includes many green building
elements. The green roof disguises residential parking under the
development. The second stop is the MoZaic redevelopment project, also
located on the greenway. This missed-use project converts surface
parking lots into a residential tower, office building, public plaza,
transit hub connection, expanded movie theatre and other neighborhood
serving retail uses. MoZaic has a 25,000 s.f. green roof and 5,500 s.f.
of pervious pavers. The third stop will be the Walker Library. This
library, completed in 1981 represents pioneer work in earth-sheltering
and day lighting. The green roof covers public space underground. The
final stop will be the Edgewater Condominiums. This luxury condo project
includes 24 condos and features a green roof accessible to the three
penthouse condo owners.

3: Prairie Technologies, Rockford, MN
The 50,000 s.f. manufacturing and office facility is located in
Rockford, MN, about 35 miles west of Minneapolis. The site and building
include many sustainability features and is registered with the USGBC
LEED program. It was awarded the 2005 Excellence in Design Award by the
National Roofing Contractors Association for its innovative roof design.
The building includes a 5,000 s.f. extensive vegetation garden roof
system. This tour may also stop at the 242,000 s.f. Hennepin County
Public Works Facility located in Medina, MN, about 20 miles west of
Minneapolis. Although it does not include a green roof, the site and
building employ many sustainability features and was awarded the
Minneapolis AIA Design Award in 1998.
