GRP Designation Gaining Acceptance Among Policy Makers

“Policy makers are increasingly looking to the Green Roof Professional designation to help them ensure that the people working on their green roof projects have completed the necessary training and understand best practices”, said Jeffrey L. Bruce, Chair, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities; President, Jeffrey L Bruce & Associates.

“We decided to provide additional credit to project teams that have someone with the GRP designation because they have demonstrated a commitment to fully understanding the main technical issues associated with green roof design.” said Dr. Hamid Karimi, Deputy Director, Office of Natural Resources, District (DC) Department of the Environment.

“Cities are starting to specify building standards for green roofs, and they want to make sure they are properly designed and maintained. We are thrilled that Devens joins Calgary and Washington, DC in recognizing the value of the GRP designation”, said Steven W. Peck, Founder and President, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC). GRHC will be providing GRP training at CitiesAlive, the 9th Annual Green Wall Conference in Trade Show in Philadelphia, on November 30th.

Background

The Green Roof Professional (GRP) designation was developed over the last nine years by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, a non-profit industry association. It requires that candidates pass a two-hour exam that covers a wide range of best practices associated with the ‘black arts’ or non-living aspects of green roofs, and the ‘green arts’ or the living aspects. Successful green roof design, installation and maintenance requires cross disciplinary expertise, and the GRP designation fosters such expertise. Candidates for the GRP exams are encouraged to take four days of extensive training and to review and study for Resource Manuals. There are more than 500 GRPs in the market and they can be reached through the electronic Members Directory at www.greenroofs.org.
