Dr. Brad Bass, Research Award

Dr. Brad Bass is a researcher based in Toronto, Ontario. His work’s impact has ranged across different cultures and scientific disciplines and he has shared his knowledge of green roofs with people from elementary school students to fellow scientists and industry leaders. His work has not only contributed to the quality and success of the green roof industry in North America, but has inspired others to do likewise.

Dr. Bass earned his PhD in Geography from Penn State University in 1989 specializing in applied climatology that focused on relationships between plants and climate. He has worked for Environment Canada in a number of capacities involving water quality, energy, green infrastructure, and biodiversity since 1991. He has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto since 1994. He has published green roof work in such peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, BioScience, Journal of Green Building, and Urban Ecosystems.

He initiated the first green roof research site in Canada with government and industry partners to monitor stormwater runoff reductions and thermal performance. This led to green roof sites in the City of Toronto and the adoption of green roofs as a runoff reduction technology by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. In collaboration with Portland State University, the US Green Building Council and the green roof industry, he generated the first multistory- building simulation assessing the impact of a green roof on energy consumption, leading to the development of the Green Roof Energy Calculator which compares energy savings between different roofs for 100 cities across North America. He also simulated the impact of the urban heat island in Toronto with and without green roofs and urban forestry, which was cited in City of Toronto’s Green Roof Benefit Analysis, the Province of Ontario’s Guidelines for Improving Municipal Air Quality, The Benefit Assessment for the City of Toronto, and Toronto’s Green Roof By-Law.

In addition, he has conducted a life-cycle assessment of green roofs, photovoltaic panels and solar thermal technologies based on embodied energy. Furthermore, he recruited and led a team of researchers and industry representatives in the development of protocol for biodiversity research on green roofs and then co-authored best practice guidelines for biodiverse roofs.

Dr. Bass has been the recipient of several awards including the National Research Council Research Award for Green Roof Research in 2003, an Appreciation of Service Award from Green Roofs for Health Cities in 2010 for work as Chair of the Research Committee and for serving as a member of the Board of Directors, and the Civic Award of Recognition from the City of Mississauga, Ontario in 2010 for participation on the Environmental Advisory Committee. He was also a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

All this hard work and more make Dr. Brad Bass an excellent champion of green roofs and a very deserving recipient of this year’s Research Award of Excellence.
