Kansas City Landscape Architect Named Chairman of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities

Jeffrey L. Bruce, FASLA, LEED, ASIC, Owner & Managing Member of Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company, LLC, a Kansas City, Missouri-based landscape architecture firm, has been named Chair of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC). GRHC was founded in 1999 as a small network of public and private organizations, and is now a rapidly growing association for green roof experts in North America. Its mission is to increase the awareness of the economic, social and environmental benefits of green roofs and green walls, and other forms of living architecture through education, advocacy, professionalism and celebrations of excellence.

Green Roofs Professional Designation Launched


Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), the North American Green Roof Industry Association, is pleased to announce the launch of the new Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Program on June 5, 2009 at the 7th Annual International Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference in Atlanta, GA hosted by GRHC.

130 Conference Delegates were the first to complete the newly launched Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Exam. The test covered the key areas of knowledge expected of a Green Roof Professional and encompassed five areas of concentration including pre-design, design, contract management, quality assurance and support, and maintenance. GRP accreditation will verify the designated GRP has attained a level of the interdisciplinary knowledge needed in the design, installation and maintenance of green roof systems. GRP accreditation also provides continuing education credits for AIA, ASLA, APA and LEED.

Toronto City Council Adopts Mandatory Green Roof Requirements

Toronto leads North America by requiring green roofs on new buildings!

TORONTO, ON – May 27, 2009 – Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, (GRHC) the North American green roof industry association, is pleased to announce that the City of Toronto passed a new green roof by-law with overwhelming support yesterday. The green roof by-law consists of a green roof construction standard and a mandatory requirement for green roofs on all classes of new buildings. The by-law requires up to 50 per cent green roof coverage on multi-unit residential dwellings over six storeys, schools, non-profit housing, commercial and industrial buildings. Larger residential projects require greater green roof coverage, ranging anywhere from 20 to 50 per cent of the roof area.

US Green Roof Industry Grows By 35 Percent in 2008!

Chicago Tops North America for Most Green Roof Installed!

Toronto, Canada – May 20, 2009 – Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the green roof industry association is pleased to announce the results from its Fourth Annual Industry Survey of Corporate Members completed green roof projects in 2008. The survey indicates a US growth rate of more than 35 per cent over 2007, representing more than 3.1 million square feet installed in 2008.

Mr. Lehrman’s subject was “30 Years of Green Roofs in Minnesota” and his talk explored the pioneering work done in this field by The Leonard Parker Associates, which became Parker Design International in 2006.

Restaurant owners began installing a green roof over a large portion of the restaurant Tuesday, June 16. Owners Dick Heidenberger, Steve Montgomery, Kevin Roberts and Jim Weisgerber have been interested in green-roof technology since seeing one at Black Ankle Vineyards in Mt Airy, Md. Weisgerber and Roberts assisted in installing a green roof at the Black Ankle tasting room building in 2008.

Toronto last month became the first major city in North America to pass a bylaw requiring that any new development with floorspace of more than 2,000 square meters devote between 20 and 60 percent of its roof to vegetation. The rule applies to residential, commercial, industrial and institutional structures.

TORONTO, ON - May 27 2009 – Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), the rapidly growing not-for-profit industry association of green roof and wall experts in North America, is pleased to announce the winners of its 2009 Green Roof Awards of Excellence!

Steven W. Peck, GRHC President and Founder, announced the winners in the lead-up to the 7th annual International green roof and wall conference, ‘Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities’ taking place June 3 – 5 in Atlanta GA. Said Peck, “Since 2003, it has been our honor to grant Awards of Excellence to leaders in the growing field of living architecture.
